You can find the Guardian Home contract for review and reference under the "Contracts" tab.
It is also a difficult job, we aren't going to lie.
But Guardian Homes are such an important and essential part of our program. Because we are a strict NO KENNEL program, and our promise is that every program dog will be primarily a pet and experience a life where they are raised, loved, cared for, and cherished in a home/family environment, we need Guardian Homes.
For female Guardian Dogs, this means the Guardian Home cares for the future momma dog while she is growing and developing, making sure she makes it through all her puppy milestones and works with Jennifer & Charlie to get her fully health tested, trained, and ready to be a momma for DOC. If/when the puppy grows into a dog that meets the stringent health requirements to be a DOC momma, the Guardian Home will have to say good-bye to their pet for two weeks before whelping and through up to 8 weeks post whelp when her puppies are weaned and ready to go home. Guardian Homes of female dogs can expect their contract to last through 2 to 5 litters, depending on the health and vitality of the momma and babies.
For a male Stud Guardian Dog, there is a LOT to do. We not only need our Guardian Dog studs to work for our program, but sometimes we stud our males out to other approved programs. This means that the Guardian Dog for a stud must do all those health related things discussed above for females, but also provide transportation to the reproductive veterinarian whenever the stud dog needs to be collected for our program or an outside program. Depending on the vitality of the male stud dog, the Guardian Home can expect to be contractually bound to transport the stud dog beginning after the stud dog's 1st birthday, and through 6 years following.
We also require our Guardian Homes to maintain Trupanion health insurance on their Guardian dog through the contractual agreement period of the Guardian Dog's life.
Guardian Homes can also count on the fact that when their Guardian Dog is temporarily living with us here at Doodles Of Cypress, they will be treated with ALL the LOVE and CARE we treat ALL of our dogs with.
We have stipulations on where you can live, and where you can take your Guardian Dog. There are lots of rules and a lot of time and energy goes into being a Guardian Home.
One of the greatest benefits that our Guardian Homes benefit from is that they get a BREEDER'S PICK OF THE LITTER Doodles Of Cypress Puppy at no up front cost. There are many programs that still charge a purchase fee for their Guardian Home Placements, but we do not. We believe in and so appreciate the sacrifices that Guardian Homes take on in order to help us continue to provide outstanding dogs to working placements and companionship placements, and we feel like providing that Guardian Dog at no up front cost to the Guardian is a fair deal all around and we are glad to do it.
Even though there is no upfront cost, our Guardian Homes are responsible for ALL other care and maintenance of the Guardian Dog, except for medical breeding related costs.
During the 1st year of the Guardian Dog's life, Doodles Of Cypress will pay for and coordinate Genetic & OFA (possibly PennHip as well) testing for eyes, patellar, heart, elbows, and hips. Once a male stud dog has passed all that and reaches one year of age, they begin working! For females, they must pass all health testing, and can be bred on their 3rd heat cycle. Female Guardian Dogs will be bred approximately once per year, unless otherwise agreed upon, as we are very cognizant that back to back breedings would require the Guardian Home to be without their beloved family member for a large chunk of the year.
Guardian Dogs will be forever family members of the Guardian Home, and the Guardian Home will get a front row seat to watching their dog contribute to providing amazing families the wonderful puppy they have been dreaming of! Guardian Homes become a part of that circle of love created by Doodles Of Cypress, producing incredible puppies for working and companionship placements. Knowing you are a HUGE part of helping families in this way is so rewarding and meaningful! Once the Guardian Dog has fulfilled their contract with Doodles Of Cypress, we will pay for the dog to be spayed or neutered, and we will transfer legal ownership over to the Guardian Family at that time, who will continue to love and care for their Doodles Of Cypress dog for the rest of their life.
We expect our Guardian Homes to keep in touch, send regular pictures, reach out with any and all concerns, and raise their puppy with rules, limits, expectations in a home environment full of love and balance. We also expect our Guardian homes to be located within an hour of our home here in Cypress, TX, and to remain within that radius for the duration of the Guardian Home Contract.

One last thought...not every home is a best fit for a Guardian Dog, so please keep in mind there is an approval process. Placing Guardian Dogs in Guardian Homes is a very costly and risky financial investment for us, and it needs to be a good fit both ways -- good for you and also good for us. We ask you to respect that process. Not qualifying for a Guardian Home placement does not mean that one would not qualify as a regular client for Doodles Of Cypress. Truly, so many factors need to be taken into consideration for Guardian Home placements that are not required of our regular clients purchasing a dog for themselves.
